The regulations followed by the spirulina production :

Sanitation Standard for Edible Algae
DOH Food No. 0900080664 Announced, 12/31/2001
1. Heavy metals: not more than 20 ppm (as Pb).
2. Arsenic: not more than 2 ppm (as As).
3. Total aerobic plate count: not more than 50,000 per gram.
4. Coliform bacteria: negative.
5. Limit of pheophorbide:
1. Existing pheophorbide : edible green algae: not more than 60 mg%; edible blue algae: not more than 50 mg%.
2. Total pheophorbide : edible green algae: not more than 80 mg%; edible blue algae: not more than 100 mg%.
Notes :
1. Edible algae include edible green algae and blue algae with the moisture content less than 7%.
2. Total pheophorbide is the sum of the existing pheophorbide and the activity of chlorophyllase.
3. Limit of heavy metals, arsenic and pheophorbide are based on dry weights.
4. The original “Sanitation Standard for Edible Green Algae (and the derived products)” was abolished as soon as this new standard was announced.
